Hej! Copenhagen

I have always had an urge & desire to visit Scandinavia, well I am not quite sure whether Denmark qualifies as Scandinavia, but it was close enough for me & I booked my flights and hotel for a few nights in Copenhagen.

I was excited upon arrival, purchased my train ticket at the counter in the arrival hall and quickly made my way down to the platforms. I was a bit shocked to see how ugly the train was that I had to board - but, don’t judge a book by its cover and apart from the exterior of the train, it certainly was a quick and smooth trip to the city center.

I studied and had a copy of the city map with me, and quickly started walking in the direction of my hotel. On the map it did not seem to be that far…. well, suitcase in hand and traipsing around an unfamiliar city, it took a bit longer than I expected - about a good 35min.

Along the way I got to take some nice photos of the scenery and finally arrived at my hotel, Hotel Cabin Express in Frederiksberg.

This is a cheap hotel, with basic amenities - so cannot expect too much. The rooms are small, the bathroom unit really small, but for someone on a budget it will suffice.

The location was a bit way out - and I did not feel like spending a lot of money to use the metro and buses - so I opted to rent a bicycle and cycle around the city at my own leisurely pace. I had one request at the bike shop ~ to have a big bike ~ and boy did I get one! Thankfully there are stands at traffic lights for cyclists to lean against.

Now I have to mention, that something that I was aware of before arriving in Copenhagen, but only got to realize to what extent when I was actually there, is how expensive everything is. I am by no means stingy, but I don’t like wasting and spending money unnecessary. Things are expensive in Copenhagen so be warned!

I think that is also part of why I rented a bicycle, to keep traveling costs down, added to the convenience & freedom of being able to come and go as I pleased.

I had not specific itinerary or set plans for my time in Copenhagen, just to go and stop when and where I pleased, which I feel for me was the right way to explore and experience the city. Most of my pics were taken while cycling around and I think it leads to a different view and perspective of things than moving along the same lines as most visitors and tourists.

One of the very Danish things to try of course is smørrebrod ~ I stopped at a local little coffee shop for a bite to eat when it started raining and tried it - tasty and filling! I tried a tuna & egg topping, but there are countless variations and toppings to choose from.

Another recommended place to visit for some interesting food and beverages is the Street food warehouse at Papiroen, overlooking the river and harbor.

There are various stalls selling food and drinks, with inside and outside seating areas.

I purchased some snacks/light meal at a convenience store and it was not particularly cheap: 2 drinks, chicken pasta salad and 3 cheese sticks ~ this was about DKK110.

I had a few late lunches at buffet restaurants - which can come in very handy for travelers on a budget. It is not that expensive and is all-you-can-eat, which is a good deal to keep one going through most of the day.

Dalle Valle (DKK79 for lunch & DKK119 for dinner) is more centrally located in the center of the city where a lot of people and visitors will probably move around ~ take a look at some pics of the food on offer here…..

Ankara serves a selection of Mediterranean food and a little bit cheap at DKK59 for lunch, with the option of adding some beverages.

Have a look at the dishes and food one offer here….

And so after 3 days of eating & cycling & appreciating the sights and sounds of Copenhagen, I was off again towards my next destination and when I arrived at the airport, there was yet again another new experience for me…

Everything was self help and self check in… It took a while but I eventually reigned supreme and was on my way to the Netherlands!
